Chat Help Information
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a form of real-time Internet text messaging (chat) or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private messaging as well as chat and data transfers via Direct Client-to-Client.

Buckhannon Live has its own chat server. irc.buckhannonlive.com

You connect to the chat server via a web page that has an irc chat client program incorporated into the web page.
You can also connect to the chat server using stand alone chat clients such as mIrc which is the most widely
used chat client.

Below is the actual chat client
The Top bar -- Gives you 2 option boxes. Channels and Help

Channels - This box lets you list the various channels on the server. There can be many channels on the server.
Channels that do not have anyone in them will not be listed, only the channels that are currently active with chatters are listed.
We will show you how to start your own channels and become operator of your channel later in this tutorial.

Help box - Brings you to this tutorial page.
On the right side of the chat client is the list box.
It shows you who is on the particular channel that you are in.

By right clicking on a name a pop-up box will appear enabling
you to select and use certain options based on your status within a particular channel.

The options are are:
whois, query, kick, ban, kickban
op,de-op, voice, de-voice
ping, version, time, finger

We will talk about whois, query, ping, version, time, finger.
Therse are the options used the most by normal users. The other options are used by the channel Owner and his designated channel operators (moderators).

WHOIS
Example 1 is a persons whois that is a channel operator, and also the
network administrator of the irc chat server itself.

Changing your nick:

By default when you enter the server you are given the name of Guest
or Guest###

To change this simply type in the white box the nick that you would like to use and press the return key.
or
use the nick command on the input commmand /nick yournewnick replacing yournewnick wiht the nick
you want to use.

Fonts and colors:
On most channels changing your font and your text color will get you kicked out
of the channel. Repeated violation might even get you banned from a channel.
We will not tell you here how to change your font or color.

In most cases it is the bot that takes care of most channel violations and the
bot that will initiate your being kicked from channel.

We will discuss the roll of the channel bot later.

Channel talk Line:

This is where you enter the information that you want others to see
in the chat room (channel)
Public and private channel lines:

These two lines hold the channel and private window buttons.

Public Line:
The public line holds the buttons for the various channel windows that you are in.
Most times you will be in only one channel but can be in several channels
depending on how well you multi-task.

By clicking on a button it shows that particular channel in the window, thus
letting you go back and forth between channel windows.

Private line:
The private line holds the buttons for most importantly the server status window.
This window shows the various messages from the server.

It also holds the buttons for any private chats you have initiated. Switching
between them like you would channels windows.
This ends the tutorial for the java chat.
If there is anything you think we should add
please let one of the irc operators know thanks

We will talk here about the chat client written in Java that is incorporated on our web page, how to use it and give
you information on some basic irc commands.
Rules of behavior
Chat rooms usually have stringent rules that they require users to follow in order to maintain integrity and safety for their users. Particularly in rooms for children, rules usually do not allow users to use offensive language, or to promote hate mail, violence and other negative issues. Also chat rooms often do not allow advertising in their rooms or flooding, which is continually filling the screen with repetitive text. Typing with caps lock on is usually considered shouting and is discouraged.

Sometimes chat room venues are moderated either by limiting who is allowed to speak (not common), or by having moderation volunteers patrol the venue watching for disruptive or otherwise undesirable behaviour.

Yet, most commonly used chat rooms are not moderated and users may type what they personally choose to send.
